Tchaikovsky’s classic score for this Christmas story opens with a “Miniature Overture.”
The music sets the fanciful holiday mood by using upper registers of the orchestra exclusively as the curtain opens to reveal the iconic Moscow Skyline and guests arriving for a Christmas Eve Party. Masha, her little brother Fritz, and mother and father Staulbaum are celebrating the holiday with friends and family from around the world, when the mysterious godfather, Uncle Drosselmeyer, enters with his magical gifts.
Drosselmeyer produces a large bag of Christmas gifts for all the children. He then presides over a puppet show which foreshadows the events of the Christtmas story ballet itself. All are very happy, except for Masha, who has yet to be presented a gift. Uncle Drosselmeyer then produces the life-size dolls, Kissy Doll, Harlequinn and the Moorish Dolls as presents for all to enjoy in wonderment. When the dances are finished, Masha approaches Uncle Drosselmeyer asking for her Christmas gift. He gives her a beautiful toy Nutcracker, in the traditional shape of a soldier. Masha is overjoyed, but her brother Fritz is jealous, and breaks the Nutcracker. The guests enjoy Christmas dancing until the party ends and Masha goes to bed.
While everyone is sleeping, Uncle Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker. When the clock strikes midnight, Masha hears the sound of mice in her bedroom. She wakes up and tries to run away, but the mice stop her. Perhaps Masha is still in a dream? The Christmas tree suddenly begins to grow to enormous size, filling the room and the Nutcracker comes to life. He rises to defend Masha and the Mouse King leads his mice into battle. Here Tchaikovsky continues the miniature effect of the Overture, setting the battle music again predominantly in the orchestra’s upper registers.
A conflict ensues, and when Masha helps the Nutcracker by holding the Mouse King by the tail or throwing her shoe at him, the Nutcracker seizes his opportunity and defeats him. The mice retreat, taking their wounded leader with them. The Nutcracker is then transformed into a prince. Masha and her magic Nutcracker Prince travel to the Snow Forrest where traditional Russian figures, Ded Moroz, Father Christmas, and Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, welcome Masha and her Nutcracker Prince into their world of peace and harmony. The score conveys the wondrous effect of the journey by introducing a wordless children’s chorus. (Read More) HERE

CHANEL fall winter-HAUTE COUTURE

The CHANEL fall/winter Couture show closely resembles the 2011 blockbuster movie TRON, with a hit of eyewear from The Black Swan flick. It’s too bad, CHANEL didn’t enlist Daft Punk themselves to do the runway soundtrack for the fall/winter show… #1 step the party planner overlooked. Its the icing on the tip of the iceberg of CHANEL’s look or launch into the future of structured garments and lighted attire. The fall/winter collection is a refreshing take on the “CHANEL SUIT”, with the matching lace eyewear and gloves. Not to mention, the overly flattering fit on most of the suit's waistline, overall the collection screams: sexy attitude, a bit of the dark side of reality or Paris’s winter weather, with a burst of fem in the lace and matching trim. Always a controlled look/design for the in control women. Love the brave take on Hollywood’s imagery from Tron and Black Swan for the show…and into the attire.

Tory Burch
As writer for www.style.com
Meenal Mistry puts it, "she's stuck to her what-my-friends-and-I-want-to-wear strategy. For Spring, Burch said she was in the mood for elegant sportswear with clean lines and silhouettes. At the clean-lined extreme, that meant a crisp white tunic tucked into a slim A-line navy skirt, pulled together with a sleek bright gold belt." I think Meenal is right-on. I'm no fashion editor, nor do I wear high-fashion clothes but my take on Tory is her ability to pull together a very wearable fashion with a huge stab of bright and bold. The type of women I envision who wears her clothes is; well traveled- likes adventure(bright colors from Peru), confident, social but a career minded individual that likes to take risks now and then. Her clothes just look FUN to wear! The type of clothes you put on in the morning/or after work just before meeting up for drinks- and it changes your whole mood.Monday, January 31, 2011
Brazilian artist Henrique @ BMOCA
Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art presents a solo exhibition of the work of Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira. As part of the exhibition, Oliveira will create one of the temporary, large-scale installations from pieces of salvaged wood for which he has received international attention. Usually built from discarded weathered fencing material collected from construction sites throughout the city of São Paulo, these “tridimensionals”, as he refers to them, are immense structures that overarch the disciplines of painting, sculpture, and architecture. For the installation at BMoCA Oliveira will use locally sourced and repurposed plywood which he arranges in thin undulating layers in a gestural manner that links these constructs to Abstract Expressionism—both visually and conceptually. In addition to this installation, BMoCA will show a number of Oliveira’s acrylic paintings.
